Abstract: In the new engineering practical teaching system, course experiments are a compulsory part of practice, while subject competitions can serve as an extension and effective extension of course experiments, both of which run through the entire process of new engineering education. This article takes the metallographic experiment of the engineering materials course at Nanjing Forestry University as an example, and explores the construction of an experimental teaching model extended from the “metallographic competition”in laboratory construction, teaching content, teaching methods, and evaluation system to address the problems existing in current experimental teaching. The practice shows that this mode has improved the level of experimental teaching, effectively improved the students'experimental operation ability, ability to analyze and solve practical problems, and practical innovation ability, and provided a reference for the reform of experimental courses for engineering majors.
