Abstract: Japanese filler (「フィラー」) does not have propositional content. Even if it is removed, it does not affect the communication information of the discourse. Therefore, Japanese learners tend to regard it as a dispensable phonetic phenomenon. In fact, the emergence of filler has pragmatic motivation, which is not only a pragmatic means, but also a pragmatic strategy. Its use reflects the speaker's pragmatic intention, which is an important component of discourse output and understanding. While Chinese Japanese learners are influenced by their native language when they speak Japanese, they use Chinese filler unconsciously. It is an urgent task to clarify the pragmatic features of Japanese filler.
