Application of SHPB Experimental System in Rock Mechanics Teaching

Abstract: Dynamic disturbances often induce mechanical property degradation of surrounding rock, leading to engineering disasters such as rockburst and large-scale roof collapse. Conducting dynamic mechanical experiments on surrounding rock using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) constitutes a critical component of mining engineering education. This paper comprehensively introduces the composition, operational principles, experimental procedures, and safety protocols of the SHPB apparatus, critically analyzes prevailing challenges in current experimental teaching practices, and proposes targeted improvement strategies. By integrating this experimental pedagogy, students'practical competencies and scientific research literacy are effectively cultivated, thereby establishing a robust foundation for their future engagement in advanced scientific investigations.
