Exploration and Practice of Specialty Integration in Medical Life Science Curriculum

Abstract: Innovation ability is an important aspect of nurturing medical talents in Tongji University school of medicine (TUSM). Tongji University school of innovation and entrepreneurship has top designed the innovation and entrepreneurship education (IEE) curriculum system and provided strong supports for IEE for medical students. However, there are some problems in IEE for medical students, such as IEE teaching team lacking medicine background, the medicine relevant examples less involved, the cognitive misunderstandings on IEE occurring in medical teachers and medical students and so on. The integration of the specialty and innovation education (ISIE) is being proven to be an effective way to train innovation ability for undergraduates. By training and establishing a teaching team with ISIE ,redesigning professional contents incorporated into basic methods, innovative thinking of IEE , which included mind mapping, Osborn Checklist, Brain Storming, Fish bone diagram and TRIZ, etc., and introducing typical excellent works from top authoritative journals to students, the philosophy of ISIE has been strengthened in teachers and students. Medical students can learn professional knowledge in order to practice in their daily study with critical thinking, innovative thinking and innovative methods. Under the guidance of innovative methods, medical students can develop innovative improvement/design of medical related equipment/technology.
