Abstract: The classified development of colleges and universities is an effective way to solve the problems of unclear orientation, assimilation and blind competition. Classification research in recent years, Chinese colleges and universities is relatively abundant, this article from the connotation and meaning of the classification of colleges and universities, the classification of the colleges and universities on the basis of theory, the classification system of colleges and universities carry out the system of the university classification research literature analysis, found that in most studies, the classification criterion is a deductive system rather than an inductive result; the research on college classification policy based on Chinese national conditions is obviously insufficient; the classification index of colleges and universities in China lacks the attention to non-rigid indexes such as people and culture three problems.
